| Eastlake Our “Eastlake” easel is representative of a style popularized by Charles L. Eastlake, an English architect and writer, who lived from 1836 until 1906. Mr. Eastlake advocated people to return to simple, straight-line designs which were inspired by country pieces. Charles favored decorating with a single, cohesive style to create an uncluttered atmosphere. His pieces were usually manufactured in oak or fruitwoods. In 1872, he published a book in the United States which became a decorating masterpiece and helped to plant the seeds of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Throughout his life, he encouraged honesty in construction and finishing. Mr. Eastlake’s use of rugged woods in their natural state, without stains and varnishes, exemplified the long-lasting characteristics of Eastlake furniture. |
