| LADY OF THE LAKE The “Lady of the Lake” was believed to be the foster-mother of Sir Lancelot. She raised him beneath the murky waters of her Lake. She is better known for her presentation of the magical sword “Excalibur” to King Arthur. Merlin, the King’s magician and seer, fell deeply in love with the Lady and he taught her all his mystical powers. Eventually, the Lady was obliged to reclaim her sword when King Arthur was fatally wounded at the Battle of Camlann and she hurled Excalibur back into the misty waters. Lady of the Lake was undoubtedly a water deity and extremely popular because as a goddess she controlled the essential essence of life. The easy movement of rivers and springs clearly show the supernatural powers of the goddesses who live within and daily offerings at aquatic features have always been a common practice. This practice continues today at wishing wells across the world and the Lady of the Lake is remembered as “Lady Luck”. |
